Dental First Aid Guide

While you wait to reach us, these steps can make a significant difference in your outcome. Act quickly — many dental emergencies are time-sensitive.

Knocked-Out Tooth

What to do

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown — never touch the root.
  • Rinse gently with clean water (do not scrub).
  • Try to reinsert it in the socket, or keep it moist in milk or saliva.
  • Contact us immediately — time is critical (within 30–60 min).

What NOT to do

  • Do not wrap it in a dry tissue.
  • Do not let it dry out.
Broken or Chipped Tooth

What to do

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Save any broken fragments if possible.
  • Call us to schedule an urgent appointment.

What NOT to do

  • Do not take aspirin directly on the gum — it can burn tissue.
  • Do not ignore it even if there is no pain.
Severe Toothache

What to do

  • Rinse with warm salt water to clean the area.
  • Use dental floss to gently remove any trapped food.
  • Apply a cold compress externally for 20 min intervals.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol).

What NOT to do

  • Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.
  • Do not ignore persistent pain — it may indicate infection.
Dental Abscess

What to do

  • Rinse with mild salt water several times a day.
  • Apply a cold compress to relieve pain and swelling.
  • Do not attempt to pop or drain the abscess yourself.
  • Seek urgent dental care — abscesses can spread quickly.

What NOT to do

  • Do not delay treatment — this is a serious infection.
  • Do not apply heat to the area.
Lost Crown or Filling

What to do

  • Keep the crown safe if it came off intact.
  • Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum as a temporary cover.
  • Avoid chewing on that side.
  • Contact us to have it re-cemented or replaced.

What NOT to do

  • Do not use super glue or regular adhesives.
  • Do not leave the tooth exposed for long — sensitivity will worsen.
Soft Tissue Injury (Lip, Tongue, Cheek)

What to do

  • Rinse gently with clean water.
  • Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to control bleeding.
  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • If bleeding does not stop within 15 min, go to the nearest ER.

What NOT to do

  • Do not apply alcohol or hydrogen peroxide directly.
  • Do not ignore heavy or prolonged bleeding.
